HCAP is financing investments on 5G technologies

The subsidiary enterprise “Phaistos” will be endowed with 25% from the revenues of the spectrum sale and will operate as venture capital that will support new investments in 5G applications

The Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations is accelerating its pace for the implementation of investment plans regarding the digital transformation of the wider public sector enterprises and the financing of cutting-edge technologies. In this context, HCAP, through its subsidiary enterprise “Phaistos” will be “endowed” with 25% of the revenues from the allocation of the advanced 5G mobile telecommunications spectrum. Utilizing this endowment but also other HCAP assets, “Phaistos” will operate as a venture capital which will finance investments in new 5G solutions.

According to the initial planning, the government estimates that it will receive more that 350 million euros from the issuance of the new 5th generation mobile telecommunications licenses, through a tender procedure which will be completed the latest by December the 20th. Applications are scheduled to be submitted in October. All three mobile network operators, Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind, will attend the auction.

Change and opportunities

The new 5G telecommunications network is estimated to evolve into a decisive factor for change, not only by creating opportunities but also by overthrowing traditional ways of operating in businesses and the public sector. The ultra-high speeds and the minimized transmission latency brought by 5G technologies enable significant innovations in the development of applications and solutions with high-speed data exchange, remote control, and interactivity features in important fields such as Health, Industry, Labor, Transport, Environmental Management and everyday life.

Priority

5G technologies will add significant capabilities to public service networks, in ways which will determine the future of entire sectors, such as energy, transportation and commodity supplies.

The creation of a specialized 5G investment capital in Greece, under HCAP’s structure which, will, thus, examine, promote and highlight solutions by start-ups and other sectorial enterprises, is one the priorities of HCAP’s management.

“In addition to the obvious benefits, such as increased transaction speed, security, etc, 5G technology offers another opportunity” as HCAP’s CEO, Ms. Rania Ekaterinari, states, adding that “It requires the creation of an ecosystem of cooperation between the State, the research and academic sector, the technology industry, the local authorities, start-ups and the State-Owned Enterprises, while in could also attract investment funds”

Cutting-edge technologies

It is noted that the State-Owned Enterprises could play a key role in the development of the 5G ecosystem and of other cutting-edge technologies, utilizing the scope of their network coverage, but also through added valued applications, such as “smart” transport and “smart” energy networks, based on real time data transmission and analysis.
